Big Announcement: Bolt 5.0 on the horizon

Hi there Bolt Community β˜•οΈ

Our community's outstanding contributions

It has been close to 6 months since Bolt's complete rebuild was released, and oh boy, what a journey it has been!

In that short amount of time, the core team has accepted over 320 Pull Requests in our main open source repository alone, from some 38 contributors.
Our community has shown incredible enthusiasm for the Bolt Project, building awesome websites, writing documentation, developing extensions and helping one another on our Slack channel.

Thanks to you folks we will even be able to release the next version of Bolt a lot sooner than we ever expected! Likely within the next couple of months. Keep an eye on this website for the exact date.

Once more, thank you for being a part of the Bolt Community. πŸ™

What will the new features in 5.0 be?

The steep increase in contributions we have seen means we're ready to release big chunks of new functionality, including:

  • Roles and Permissions,
  • Notifying Editors of unsaved changes in the Editor,
  • The Bolt Editor available in Greek πŸ‡¬πŸ‡·, Polish πŸ‡΅πŸ‡± and Simplified Chinese πŸ‡¨πŸ‡³,
  • Uploading images by URL,
  • More control over routing and URL generation,
  • Secure Password Reset for Editors and Admins,
  • and many, many smaller enhancements.

Rolling out 5.0 in a smooth and orderly way

First of all: no need to panic. Bolt 4 will still be working fine.

Bolt's core will remain very much the same robust Symfony application you know,  we will simply deliver these new features in a new major release in order to follow the best practices of Semantic Versioning. Should you choose to update, the update path from 4.x to 5.x will only take around 15 minutes. As soon as we release the new version, the core team will provide you with detailed instructions on the few changes to composer.json that are needed.

To further support you in transitioning from 4.x to 5.x, we will release Bolt 4.2, which will already include some of the necessary setup.

And in case you have any questions, you can always ask us on Slack!
